Santa Elena History Center (Opening) in Beaufort, SC, April 30, 2016:

It was a wonderful ceremony in Beaufort for the new Santa Elena History Center with dignitaries from the United States and Spain. The main theme of the event seemed to be that history must be corrected.
"South Carolina— not Jamestown, not Plymouth Rock—was the site of the first permanent European settlement in the New World."

Another thing you might not know is that our Greater Piedmont Chapter of the Explorers Club was instrumental in the Santa Elena work. Archaeologist Stanley South, who just passed away in March, made the initial discover of Santa Elena in 1979. Stanley credits our Explorers Club chapter (in an archaeological report on Santa Elena) with the 1981 donation that led to the discovery of another portion of Santa Elena. Archaeologist Chester DePratter and our Explorers Club member Nena Rice were colleagues of South through this early work and Chester has since taken over excavation work at Santa Elena. Chester was honored yesterday for his many years of work at Santa Elena and now as the creator and curator of the new History Center exhibit. Chester gave us a private tour of the wonderful exhibit yesterday prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony. Nena pointed out a large photo in the exhibit that she took at the Santa Elena dig site in the early years of her career. Also involved in the event was chapter member Jim Garner who is an active member of the Santa Elena Foundation. Jim is also the National PA Directorate of the USCG Auxiliary and was a photographer on the USCG 45 Response Boat which worked to bring the replica Spanish galleon into Port Royal for this special event.

I have included a few pictures from Jim and scans of Santa Elena items from our Chapter Archives. Below are a couple of recent
